How to sew a mitered corner

Hi and welcome to my blog. I am going to start off my (once-again-wiped) blog with my first attempt at a tutorial. Firstly... a little background of how this tutorial came to be.

I decided after much deliberation, to create an attic window quilt for my father in law using this panel of fabric.

This is what I have so far...

While posting over on quiltinghaven.com about the possibility of making an attic window quilt using the panel of fabric shown above, the subject of mitered corners was mentioned. Well, being the kind of person who tends to just jump in with both feet, I decided to just fumble forward and do what worked for me. So without further ado... here is how I did my mitered corners. I hope that this all makes sense, it is my first attempt at a tutorial.

How to make mitered corners

Sew on the strips for your sides, make sure you leave excess at the corners (more is better), as you can see, I was a little short on mine, hopefully I can work around it.

Fold the sides so they are even and the quilt is folded on the diagonal. (I hope this makes sense)

Mark the corner by matching the 45degree line to the edge of the strips and the edge of the ruler to the diagonal fold.

Mark sewing line with pencil or marking tool of your choice.

Even though it is a small seam, pin it. You will be sewing on the bias and pinning will help keep the fabric from stretching.

Sew the corner following the line. With the pins placed this way, you will not have to remove them while you stitch the corner.

Trim away the excess fabric, leaving a quarter inch seam allowance.

Set the seam, then press to one side, and you have a finished mitered corner.

I hope this tutorial makes sense. If you have any questions, or see any mistakes, please let me know. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful weekend.
